Causal Relationship
Causal relationship is the medical connection between the accepted work event or employment factors and the diagnosed condition. The supporting medical opinion must be rationalized, meaning the physician should identify the accurate work history, provide a diagnosis, and explain medically how the event or exposure caused or contributed to the condition. It may involve direct causation, aggravation, or acceleration of a preexisting injury, or precipitation of a latent condition. A statement that the condition is “work-related” without supporting reasoning may not be enough.
If the employee is claiming wage-loss compensation, the medical evidence must also establish that the accepted condition caused disability for work during the claimed period.
